Our 85 hour PRENATAL YOGA TEACHER TRAINING is an intensive course is aimed at giving you a thorough insight into the world of pregnancy and childbirth, revealing how yoga, meditation, pranayama and more can be of huge help to women during this amazing time of transition. Through detailed theory and practical application, you will gain the tools and confidence to lead a safe, empowering and effective prenatal yoga class for all levels of expectant woman.

This training also benefits from the input of three highly experienced women who all have a passion for supporting women pre and postnatally: Diana, a yoga teacher of more than a decade, Alexandra, a renowned Dubai based Women’s Health Physio and Zoe, a midwife who has supported hundreds of births.

Who is this course for?

This course is for 200 or 300 hour Yoga Alliance certified teachers or those currently undergoing a YA Teacher Training. It is also open to birth professionals such as doulas, midwives or those working in the field of childbirth education, who would like to enhance their knowledge and learn how yoga can benefit their patients and clients. (In order for a birth professional to then be eligible to teach a prenatal class, they would need to take an additional 200 hour yoga TT.)

What will I get at the end?

You’ll be awarded a certificate of completion and the confidence to lead all levels of prenatal yoga classes. We promise that this training will leave you feeling inspired to enter this very rewarding field of work! There will also be plenty of support post training to help you achieve your RYPT, through mentorship and potential teaching opportunities at Zen Yoga.

What will I learn?

This is an intensive course packed full of information, both theoretical and practical, that will help you gain the knowledge and confidence to lead a prenatal yoga class and empower women during pregnancy, birth and beyond. We will cover a wide number of subjects, including:

1. Overview of Prenatal Yoga

The benefits of practicing yoga during pregnancy

  • The role of the prenatal yoga teacher
  • Contraindications of yoga during pregnancy – when you should not practice and why
  • When to consult the advice of a health care professional
  • The difference between a high and non-high risk pregnancy

2. Teaching Methodology

  • How to adapt and modify yoga poses for each of the three trimesters
  • Prop usage / alignment for each trimester or to alleviate common pregnancy ailments
  • How to sequence and teach a safe, nurturing prenatal yoga class for all trimesters / levels • Prenatal sun salutation variations
  • Yoga partner work to support pregnancy and labour
  • Poses to ease pregnancy aches and pains and to help create physical strength and space
  • Poses / positions to help during labour

3. Anatomy and Physiology

  • Anatomy and physiology of the pregnant body, both the physical and subtle body
  • Understanding the changing pregnant body and how organs / systems function during pregnancy
  • Optimal Fetal Positioning – how yoga can help to position baby for a better birthing experience
  • Overview into possible positions – breech, transverse, occiput posterior, and how yoga can help with these
  • Understanding the pelvis and the pelvic floor, common issues both pre and postnatal
  • The stages of labour / what happens in the body during birth
  • Overview of possible complications, such as miscarriage, premature labour, preeclampsia
  • Postnatal anatomy – common concerns .eg. Diastasis Recti, pelvic floor weakness etc
  • Discussion of subtle body anatomy, from the chakras to our ‘apana’ – grounding energy

4. Pranayama, Meditation and Visualization

  • Pranayama to help ease anxiety and discomfort during pregnancy
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques such as Yoga Nidra to ease anxiety and stress
  • Pranayama for labour and birthing affirmations
  • Guided meditation and visualization for pregnancy and labour

5. Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics

• How yoga philosophy plays a role during the journey of pregnancy and childbirth

6. Teaching Practice

  • Hands on practice in sequencing / teaching a prenatal class for each trimester
  • Practice teaching for different needs eg. 2nd or 3rd trimester, birth preparation, partner work for labour
  • Gain confidence in adapting classes to respond to common ailments .eg. back pain, pelvic girdle pain, sciatica
  • Creating effective class plans for every pregnant body
  • Access to a wealth of pre and postnatal class plans, creative sequences and ideas that you can adapt for your own teaching and clients
  • Plenty of support practicing in groups and one on one, as well as teaching actual pregnant clients
  • Continuous feedback and mentorship

Who will be teaching the course?

Diana Azavedo

Diana is the lead trainer and has been teaching yoga for over a decade in Dubai. She is an ERYT-500 hour Yoga Alliance certified instructor and a Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RPYT) with over 150 hours of prenatal training and more than 6 years of prenatal teaching experience. Diana has a deep personal understanding of the experience of teaching prenatal yoga and is passionate about supporting women during this amazing journey.

Alexandra Collishaw, Women’s Health Physio

Alexandra specializes in women’s health, especially pregnancy related problems both pre and postnatal, treating conditions such as pelvic pain, back pain, SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction) abdominal separation, incontinence and prolapse. She moved to Dubai in 2011 and currently works as a physiotherapist at optimalTHERAPY at optimalFITNESS. Ally will be sharing her deep pre and postnatal knowledge with our students, discussing the pelvic floor, its important role in pregnancy and labour, as well as offering safe ways to support the body’s healing journey post birth.

Zoe Cresswell, Midwife

Zoe Cresswell worked in the UK for many years before moving to Dubai. While in the UK she was based in a busy London hospital and covered many areas of midwifery care, including the Labour ward, triage, pre and postnatal care, inpatient care, research and mental health. Since moving to Dubai, Zoe has been caring for pre and postnatal clients and has also taken advantage of her love of health and sport and qualified as a personal trainer, specialising in training pre and postnatal clients. During our course, Zoe will guiding us through the stages of labour and beyond, as well as offering her deep insight into the best practices and positions for childbirth.

Can you give me an idea of the daily schedule?

While each day is subject to change, this is a sample of how our training day will run:

Weekday Format

9 to 10:30am – Yoga Practice

10:30 to 11:15am – Break

11:15 to 1:30pm – Theory

I’m pregnant, can I still attend?

Absolutely! This is the perfect time to dive deeper into the practice of pre-natal yoga to see how it can benefit your own pregnant body and prepare you for birth. If you are under 12 weeks, please notify us first prior to registering for the training.

What about after pregnancy, is there a post-natal element to this course?

Yes, we will be teaching you how to understand the post-natal body, with support from one of Dubai’s most highly regarded and experienced physiotherapists, Alexandra Collishaw who has worked with countless women pre and post birth. You’ll learn about what happens to the body pre and post pregnancy, along with the possible concerns, and what you can do as a yoga teacher to aid post-natal recovery. You will practice exercises and yoga sequences that you can use for your own private clients and postnatal groups.
